Welcome! I'm Julie, a Certified Massage Therapist and the owner of Lumi Wellness. The word "lumi" means "snow" in Finnish and "illuminate" in Latin, reflecting both my Nordic heritage and intention for a massage space in Minnesota. As a mom to three boys, I understand the balance of self-care and real-life obligations. My own experience receiving bodywork following injury and illness is what ultimately led me to pursue a career in the healing arts. Because of benefits I received from many gifted practitioners, I'm genuinely dedicated to integrating holistic techniques I believe in into my work.
My bodywork education began 14 years ago with a John Barnes Myofascial Release course which I practiced informally on and off, along with The Emmett Technique. In May 2024, I graduated from Ridgewater College with a diploma in Massage Therapy. Following graduation, I obtained certification as a Holistic Abdominal Therapist and completed Traditional Lomi Lomi Massage training and education in cupping. I'm also listed on the Perrin Technique website as a practitioner for neuro-immune conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, post-lyme and long-covid having learned the technique from Dr. Perrin. I've also taken pregnancy and advanced pregnancy courses.
Long before today, it was my grandmother, a gifted massage therapist, who introduced me to the world of massage when I was barely tall enough to hop up onto her table. Though I've gained other knowledge since my first class, the empathy and care I knew from my grandmother's hands is what guides my practice today.
Rooted in Rosita Arvigo's techniques of ancient abdominal massage from the Maya people, Holistic Abdominal Therapy (HAT) also incorporates Chi Nei Tsang and some gentle visceral manipulation. Embodied Traditions HAT was created by Michelle Hansen of Moonshadow Healing Arts in Minnesota, a gifted instructor, practitioner, and student of Rosita's. Rosita's teachers included Miss Hortense Robinson and Don Elijio Panti, both renowned practitioners in Belize.
HAT methods are traditionally used to help the positioning of the uterus, reduce or alleviate menstrual cramps, improve pelvic stagnation and digestive function, improve circulation and lymphatic flow, and enhance fertility. The work is performed externally over the abdominal and pelvic area, sacrum, back, legs, and surrounding ligaments and fascia. It is a nurturing, non-invasive massage for women's reproductive and abdominal/sacral health. Don Elijio Panti, healer and herbalist, is quoted as having said, “The uterus is the woman's core, if it is out of balance, her whole life is out of balance."
*Self-care abdominal massage education and a castor oil pack application are part of this session, herbal remedies are also available for purchase.
During an Integrative Therapeutic Massage, we address specific issues or areas of the body needing attention. I pull from various holistic techniques listed in the About Me section. I also do full sessions of MFR (myofascial release). While I may apply firm pressure and target specific points, I do not perform full-body deep-tissue massages. This bodywork session is customized to each client.
Relaxation Massage is ideal for those seeking a sense of embodiment and relaxation to improve overall well-being, particularly during high-stress seasons. The focus is on a slower, more deliberate flow and soothing pressure. It uses traditional Swedish massage and Lomi Lomi strokes and is helpful for general aches, overall circulation and muscle relaxation.
